Is burnout affecting your organization? Research shows that 76% of employees experience workplace burnout at least sometimes — and the demands of relief, development and advocacy can accelerate burnout, no matter how dedicated to mission we are. Unfortunately, anybody can experience burnout. For example, in the Bible, Elijah exhibits the symptoms of burnout and the Lord ministers to his needs. What can we do to help?  

Come to this Intensive to engage other professionals who are dedicated to spiritual formation and care in their organizations, and resource providers who help organizations prevent and recover from burnout. We will:

• Engage throughout the day in spiritual exercises that align with restorative recovery
• Discuss the Burnout Phenomenon in ministry
• Introduce the Wholeness Lens
• Teach the three phases of Restorative Recovery and equip you to bring them to your context:
  • Retreat
  • Rebuild
  • Re-engage
• Learn how to assess burnout in ourselves and others

The Accord Research Alliance (ARA) community of practice is delighted to invite you to join us on
October 22 for our annual pre-conference Intensive! For the second year in a row, we are focusing on
the topic of spiritual metrics, this year specifically on the setting of organizational spiritual goals and
outcomes for programs, projects, and staff, and assessing and measuring those spiritual impacts.

This Intensive will have the following sessions:

1. Welcome, devotions, and getting to know each other
2. Best practices for setting and assessing organizational spiritual goals and impact: James Waters from KIF
3. Case studies from different development sectors: Molly Heacock and Chelsea Walker from Untold, and Brock Boleman from Mission Hope
4. Panel on the insights from the Christian philanthropic sector: Steve Mayer from Cornerstone Trust, Adrian Cook from the Rees-Jones Foundation, and Randy Kennedy from the Maclellan Foundation
5. The ethics of spiritual metrics: Ariana Salazar from Compassion International and Lincoln Lau from International Care Ministries
6. Time for reflecting and sharing about and on your own organization and its setting of and assessing spiritual goals and outomes.

The 2024 WASH Intensive is rooted in three realities of our community of practitioners and the times we are in:

1. As Accord Members we are closely aligned in purpose and lived experience, yet broadly scattered in our technical & programmatic focuses.
2. We are thirsting to deepen our collaborative relationships and fellowship, weary of competing for attention and credibility.
3. Faith-based WASH practitioners are presently confronting burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and stress over resources. We need to encourage and build each other up, celebrate our impacts while acknowledging our shared challenges.

In light of these present realities, we need an ark…

Affirm – Rejoice – Kindle (ARK)

Affirm: We will acknowledge the common struggles we all face, often silently; and attest to the value and importance in each of our callings.

Rejoice: We’ll look rigorously at the transformative impacts we are participating in as workers in the Kingdom; exhorting each other in how to return to the Joy of the Lord.

Kindle: Explore and discover how to support each other and rally together as a faith-based WASH community of practice. Reignite our hope, confidence, and vision.

Scripture Reference: Romans 12:10-12

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer…”

Content will include a keynote presentation, panel discussion, and interactive table workshops. This year’s intensive will emphasize participants building relationships with a small group of peers throughout the day; and activities will culminate with a dedicated session of prayer.

Engaging holistic economic development together 

Join this intensive to connect and learn with other practitioners and organizations in Christian economic development. We’ll delve into becoming more holistic in our economic development work, focusing on how collaboration, change management, and programmatic integrations like agriculture can help us move towards becoming more holistic. Sessions include: 

• Devotions & time to connect with one other 
• Embracing and navigating the complexity of holistic economic development – Casey Duthiers and Rachel Cheng, Resilient Communities Center 
  • We’ll workshop together a shared understanding of the complexities of our work, emphasizing how the diversity of our programs is necessary to engage the multidimensional nature of poverty. We will identify how we can navigate becoming more holistic through change management and collaboration.   
• Shift, Expand, or Partner: Case studies in holistic economic development – Abigail Sebesta, Chalmers Center  
  • In this session, three organizations will share their journeys of advancing holistic economic development through strategic or programmatic shifts, program expansion, or collaborative partnerships. Through these stories, we’ll learn about the opportunities and challenges that we all face, and discuss ways to help smooth these often uncharted waters.   
• Integrating agriculture for holistic economic development – Abram Bicksler and Robert Sanou, ECHO 
  • Many organizations incorporate agricultural programming on their journey of poverty alleviation. Smallholder farmers especially are at the heart of so much challenge and incredible opportunity. We’ll discuss how does agriculture links with other interventions (savings, financial services, training, WASH, energy, technology) and how current trends in the world make this integration even more important.
